I'm not a multi-millionaire internet marketing "guru" (yet.. ;-), who's had a web site since the year dot and is about as far removed from actually starting something like this from scratch as the USA is from Australia.

I've got great respect for some of these so-called "gurus" (and I'll tell you which ones later), but a lot of them don't explain the basics - they assume an existing level of knowledge that often isn't there (it certainly wasn't with me anyway!).

I've run 2 small businesses since 1993, a third one since July 2000, and a web site since August 2000. Although they're now successful, I've made a lot of mistakes along the way. You don't need to!

This small business ideas web site is a bit unusual because we don't make comparisons between loads of different products and resources to give you the best small business ideas - we've been there, done that and bought the T-shirts (a lot of which didn't fit!). That's why I say at the top of the page "save time, money and frustration - we've done all the research for small business ideas and resources, so you don't have to!"

If we've found a free tool or resource that does the job just as well as one you'd have to pay for, I'll tell you! Where we've found from experience that the only practical option is to buy the right tool for the job, I'll tell you that too.

Why no comparisons? (If you want the answer to this question, read on...if you don't, skip down to "Now let's get started..." below). OK, you want to understand why, so let me explain - there are three main reasons actually:

1. You have the peace of mind of knowing that for everything I tell you about, we've probably spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars to ensure that we were getting the best possible value-for-money. You'll get the same!

Without exception, these are all things we've used (and/or continue to use) ourselves - what better recommendation for small business ideas and resources could you get?

2. When I started working on our first web site, I knew absolutely nothing about the internet, other than as a casual "surfer". My brother-in-law had been on a 1-day course from his company to enable him to launch their company web site, and he kindly spent his own spare time giving us a start with our first 8 web pages (thanks Mark!).

That site now has more than 120 pages and is ranked in the top 300,000 sites (by the number of visitors) out of the 23 million on the internet. I must have spent thousands of hours on the internet learning how to get from "zero knowledge" to what I've now learnt.

If someone had told me back then exactly how to do it, including what I really need, I reckon I could have done it in a fraction of the time! That's what we'll aim to do for you.

3. There's just too much choice, too much information about marketing on the internet for small and/or home-based businesses. The average human being could spend the rest of her life learning about small business ideas on (or off) the internet and never start one, or improve the one they've already got. I'll just tell you what has worked very well for us!
